BABY = 7 STORY
And Baby Makes Seven follows the story of Anna and Ruth, a lesbian couple, who enlist their gay friend Peter to help them create a family.  But are any of them ready for parenthood?  Tensions rise as the three adults prepare for the imminent arrival of their baby—and matters are made all the more challenging by the persistence of the three imaginary children who already live with them.  The lines between fantasy and reality, child and adult, love and madness crisscross through this hysterically funny and deeply touching play about what it means to be a family.
Constance and I came to this project five years ago. As the artistic team behind Purpleman Theater Company, we read the text of And Baby Makes Seven (BABY=7) and were immediately struck by how easily today's audiences might relate to it. Then we were shocked to find out that the earliest version of the script had been written over 30 years ago! Through the help of David Savran, a distinguished professor at CUNY Graduate Center, and the lovely man to whom the play is dedicated, we got the rights to workshop the play and mount a staged reading of it produced by the Rude Mechanicals Theater Company (NYC).  Since that time, we have been working to find the right time and place to produce BABY=7.

It’s hard to believe Paula imagined this non-conventional family a generation ago. Her courage and vision to put them on stage amidst a radically different cultural and legal landscape in this country is incredible. Perhaps more incredibly is that she takes the family's existence for granted. BABY=7 is about what happens after an extraordinary family is created, yet the play feels more possible now than ever before. We’re having fun imagining what the near future might look like, and we hope you will, too!
WE NEED YOU TO JOIN OUR FAMILY!
For this six-week campaign, we are here to raise the final $32,000 of our more than $80,000 budget for this Off-Broadway production.  Our complete production budget is listed below. Look to the right and please decide which family member you would like to choose for our project. Any funds raised above our goal will go right back into the budget and help us even more fully realize our artistic vision for the play (pillows are great, but a realistic pregnancy suit is expensive!).

NEW OHIO THEATRE / PURPLEMAN THEATER COMPANY
New Ohio Theatre strengthens, nurtures and promotes a vast community of independent theatre companies and artists by developing, curating, and presenting new work in the West Village. We believe the best of New York's independent theatre community operates at the core of the contemporary theatre conversation, and acts collectively to expand the boundaries of the public imagination. As a two-time OBIE Award-winning performance venue, we provide a professional, high-profile platform for downtown's most mature, ridiculous, engaged, irreverent, gut-wrenching, frivolous, sophisticated, foolish, and profound theatrical endeavors.

Purpleman Theater Company is dedicated to the production of new works and "bruised beauties." Past productions include the world premieres of Time Is the Mercy of Eternity, by Deb Margolin; Population: 8, by Nicholas Gray; Broken Hands (winner of two FringeNYC Awards), by Moby Pomerance; and Days And Nights: page 121, lines 11 & 12, devised by the company. Whether by finding and developing new works by contemporary playwrights, producing innovative productions of established works, or by devising organic pieces, Purpleman seeks to engage with theatre's unique ability to bring people together to bear witness as a community.
